tomb sweeping festival: headed to datong.

Monday is Tomb Sweeping Festival here, which means I get a day off work, so I'm headed to Datong tonight—on a 3AM train!—with Tony, Melissa, our friend Nemanja, and his aunt.

I don't know much about the city; it wasn't on my radar at all until Nemanja asked us to go, but it looks beautiful and I've heard from fellow teachers that the 5-hour trip is worth it.

Nemanja emailed us a possible itinerary, but I didn't really look at it. I figure with his planning and Tony's Chinese, I can just follow along and enjoy. All I know for sure is we're planning on visiting the Hanging Monastery (above) and Yungang Grottoes (below).

(Confession: I don't know if I'll be able to climb all the way to the Monastery; I'm scared of heights!)

As mentioned above, we're leaving tonight (tomorrow morning?) on a train at 3AM and we'll be taking a train back Sunday night. That's the part I'm least looking forward to, the trains. Because we didn't book them until last weekend, Tony tells me our seats won't be very comfortable and it will probably be a squatter. Oh well. Welcome to China.

P.S. Check back tomorrow for a new "words for the weekend."
