"I don't want to own anything until I find a place where me and things go together. I'm not sure where that is but I know what it is like." - Audrey Hepburn
I came across this quote a little over a year ago. It resonated with me then and it resonates with me now.
I've spent a lot of time packing this week and despite the sentiments expressed above, I can't get over the amount of stuff I have accumulated. And I purged a lot of things every year -- giving items to friends or donating to charity. While wrapping breakables in bubble wrap and taping cardboard boxes, I've found myself singing in a silly, off-key voice, "I haaaate packing! I haaaate packing!" and then proclaiming, "I never want to own this much stuff again!"
And yet, I want to own things. My things.
Someday, I want to find a place where I belong. Where my things belong. Things that I have picked out and love because they make me smile, make me feel comfortable, make me feel like me.
Someday, I will have a place where me and my things go together.

Loved this post because I feel/felt the same way. In college (and a few years after that), I moved regularly and was grateful that I had very few things aside from a few key pieces of furniture to move. Since the wedding, the husband and I have a ton of stuff--stuff I love because we chose them and stuff we actually use--but we will have to move again, and I am dreading it! I also still hold off on large purchases because I haven't found THE place yet, so I'm still a bit in limbo...
ReplyDeleteI LOVE this post. One of my favourites of yours. So many people can relate. Chin up, Sunshine, it'll come. :)
ReplyDeleteI can relate! Wait until one day you have children and have to go through their toys every season. Oye! It really never ends. And then Christmas comes. Ha ha!

Gabriella - I understand the "limbo" feeling! I hope you find THE place soon but in the meantime, are able to enjoy the adventure :)
ReplyDeleteAnonymous - Thank you!
Carolyn - Haha! I actually said, "I'm never having kids! And if I do, they can't have toys!" while I was packing, too.
