About Alice by Calvin Trillin

Marta recommended a few books to her readers a while ago. Here's the e-mail I sent her after reading one of them:

"Dear Marta,

I just had to write you a quick e-mail to thank you for recommending About Alice back in August. I immediately borrowed it from the library and ate it up! I think it is my favourite memoir that I have ever read. I'm recommending it to all my friends!

One of my favourite passages was this, from a letter Alice wrote to her daughters:

'As you get older, you will begin to understand that we love you not because you are perfect, but because you are decent and loving and honest and will always deal with what life brings you with courage.'

I'm left hoping that my parents love me for those reasons, that I will someday love my own children for those reasons, and that someday someone will love me the way Calvin loves Alice.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!"

I really did love this book and finished it in just two sittings. (It would have been one but the first time I picked it up to read was late at night and I fell asleep).

If you're looking for a quick, heartwarming read, About Alice is for you!

  1. Dear Amanda,

Thank you for this post! I love reading and this book sounds lovely! I checked out the link to Marta and found another little gem called "If You Want to Write". This I am going to buy today! It looks like, as Marta says, "a keeper".
    Thanks again!
