how to stress less.

Wake up earlier.

Or rather, get out of bed earlier.

My alarm goes off at 6, but I have a habit of laying there for anywhere from 15-30 minutes. Which defeats the whole purpose of waking up at 6: having extra time to eat breakfast/drink coffee/smooch my boyfriend/relax after getting ready and before work.

The result: I end up dashing around my apartment, taking my breakfast and coffee to go, snapping at my boyfriend when he tries to give me an extra long hug, and being stressed out.

I'm much happier and less stressed on the mornings when I actually get out of bed as soon as my alarm goes off.

Bonus tip: Stay offline.

I also have a habit of reaching for my phone as soon as my alarm goes off. And then I check emails and Twitter and Facebook and Instagram, all before I've even stood up. Which means not only am I wasting time, but I'm peeking into other people's days before starting my own.

Which is why I bought an actual alarm clock instead of relying on my phone's alarm. If the internet isn't right at my fingertips, it's a tad easier to stay away, at least until I've peed and brushed my teeth.

(This is the first time I've gotten fancy and numbered anything in this series, but technically there have been 6 other "how to stress less" posts before this one.)

  1. I never understood people who snoozed past their alarm. Granted, I never set an alarm for a second earlier than necessary. I wake up at 6.05am, which gives me the exact 17 minutes I need to freshen up, dress and head out the door. And yes, I whittled that number until it was to the minute.

    1. I've never snoozed past my alarm, but I get sucked into extra cuddling time with my guy (not a bad thing) or into spending time on my phone (can be a bad thing). Before I got a smart phone, I jumped out of bed as soon as my alarm went off.

  2. Ugh, I'm the same way. I was extra horrible this morning- I snoozed my alarm for 45 minutes!! I just couldn't get out of bed. For me, I think I need to set an alarm an extra 10-15 mins before I should get up so I have some peaceful time to check e-mails, etc. before I get up. (I think it helps me slowly wake up instead of jolting out of bed)

  3. I've started getting up earlier and, though it can be rough, it's mostly great. No more rushing out of the house and I actually have time to sit and watch news or drink coffee. Definitely starts the day well!
